Description
Construction of this project required very timely planning, scheduling, coordination, and execution of the work within the coal transfer facility, operating seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day. Coal was delivered daily to the yard in 100-car unit trains, offloaded by conveyors, stockpiled, and loaded out by conveyors to barges and ships at the facility’s pier. The control of dust was critical to the continuous operation of the facility.
The major elements of the work included:
- Demolition of existing dust suppression piping system
- Installation of new 6” diameter dust suppression piping
- Installation of control and heat tracing of the piping
- Insulation of the piping
The major challenge in performance of the work was access. The work was 100’ above grade and access to the work was controlled by everchanging coal piles that were up to 80’ high. A demanding schedule, reducing the contract time by 30%, was established and coupled with material procurement and a deadline to be operational before winter. The work was completed on schedule with a very satisfied owner.
